Far less visited than Zanzibar, Mafia Island sits within a marine park protecting some of East Africa's healthiest coral reefs. Whale sharks gather in its waters between October and March, drawing divers and snorkellers from around the world. With few large resorts and no crowds, Mafia retains the feel of an undiscovered island, its beaches shaded by coconut palms and its villages still centred on traditional fishing.
