About Ngorongoro Crater
Formed when a massive volcano collapsed on itself roughly two and a half million years ago, the Ngorongoro Crater is a self-contained ecosystem 600 metres deep and 20 kilometres across. Its grassy floor, soda lake, and forested slopes hold an estimated 25,000 large animals, including one of Tanzania's last populations of black rhino. Because the crater walls keep most animals from migrating out, sightings of lion, elephant, and buffalo are near-guaranteed on a single day's descent to the crater floor.
