About Stone Town

Stone Town is the historic heart of Zanzibar City, a maze of narrow alleys, ornately carved wooden doors, and coral-stone buildings that reflect over a thousand years of trade across the Indian Ocean. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 for its well-preserved blend of Swahili, Arab, Persian, Indian, and European architecture. Landmarks include the old fort, the House of Wonders, and bustling markets that still trade in spices, much as the island did during its centuries as a global spice hub.
