Choosing a Kilimanjaro Route: Machame vs Lemosho

Machame, nicknamed the 'Whiskey Route', is the most popular path up Kilimanjaro thanks to its scenery and moderate difficulty, but its popularity means busier camps. Lemosho approaches from the west, adding an extra day and generally quieter trails, which tends to improve acclimatisation and summit success rates. Both routes cross similar climate zones, from rainforest to alpine desert, and neither requires technical climbing experience. The main trade-off is time and crowd tolerance versus a marginally higher summit success rate.
