Zanzibar's north coast, particularly Nungwi, offers calm, tide-independent swimming and the most developed tourist infrastructure on the coast, along with easy access to Stone Town's history. Mafia Island, further south, trades convenience for quiet beaches and some of the best diving on the coast, including seasonal whale shark encounters.
